UCLA colleg e student  Jonathan  Moore (Ant hony Edw ards) is pla ying a game cal led "G otcha&qu ot; (popular o n mid-1 980s co llege ca mpuses as & amp;quot;As sassin&q uot; or &a mp;quot;Tag "), wherein the  players are  all ass igned a mo ck "h it" on anothe r player  by use o f a harmless p aintball gun.  Moore an d his apar tment roomm ate Manolo go o n a vacation to Paris , France. Aft er touring so me of Paris, in a cafe Moo re meets Sasha  Banicek  (Linda Fiorent ino),  a Czechoslov akian girl. Eve ntually, Jonat han has in tercourse wi th Sasha, l osing his vir ginity. Jon athan decid es to lea ve Manolo (w ho is hea ding to Spain) and go  with Sash a to We st Berlin to s pend more time with h er. Jonathan believes that  he is in love with Sa sha. There, J onathan and Sa sha con tinue to have s ex and even go  to an Oktob erfest be er gathering . One nig ht, Sasha tells Jo nathan that she has to go to Eas t Berlin to pick u p a package. O ne night a fter arriving  in East Berlin, Sasha leaves their  hotel r oom and walks  to dark stree t corner . There, Sasha meets a German man wh o tells her t he locatio n of the pickup of her pa ckage. M eanwhile,  Sasha wa s being moni tored by a Sov iet agent, wh o was sitting in a c ar at a  distance. Du ring the day,  Sasha tells Jo nathan that if she g ives him a c ertain message, it means that he has  to leave  East Ber lin imm ediately . At a caf e, Sasha g ives Jonathan  a package  and says that a strudel  is inside. A  little  later, Sas ha tells Jona than to m eet her at t he butche r shop near their h otel. All of a sudden, a Sov iet agent  begins to chase aft er Sasha.  Sasha de cides to use Jonathan (who i s holding her  package) to  unknowi ngly ge t the p ackage over to West Berlin. Meanwhile,  Sasha is taken by the Soviet age nt and  East German sec ret police. Jo nathan goes to Checkpoi nt Charli e to cross the  heavily for tified bor der into  West Berli n. At the  East German c ustoms s earch, J onathan is  strippe d of his c lothes an d given a cav ity search. Mea nwhile, Sasha  is stripped an d searched f or possible esp ionage evid ence. Vlad arri ves at the  border c rossing  to search for J onathan,  however Jonath an pass es the border safely before he ca n be capture d. Once in West Berl in, Jo nathan feels l iberated  by the W esternized so ciety. In the h otel, Jonathan receives a m essage from Sa sha to  meet him a t a specifi ed location.  Jonathan finds out th at his hotel r oom was broke n into and r obbed of his tr aveler&# 39;s check s. Sovi et agents e ventually fin d Jonat han in West  Berlin and c hase him thr oughout a public park . Jonathan jumps i nto a wate r canal  and manag es to es cape from the  Soviets and  stumbles up on a Germ an rock grou p headed for  Hamburg,  who offer h im a ride to the airport. T he rock gr oup succ essfully get Jonatha n to the airpor t (using full-f ace makeup to sneak him p ast a ch eckpoint ) and Jon athan finally a rrives in  Los Angeles Tom Br adley Interna tional Airport  and to his ap artment. S oon, Vlad and a band of Soviet agent s arrive too in Los Angeles. Once home, Jo nathan stum bles upon a f ilm canister , which wa s plante d by Sa sha. Jonathan  visits his par ents and tells them wh at happened  in Germa ny but t hey cannot bel ieve a word of  it and t hink Jonath an is on drugs . Jonath an decide s to ca ll the FBI then the Cen tral Intell igence Ag ency fo r help. J onathan retu rns to fi nd his apar tment b roken into and lo oted. The CIA  officer tells J onathan to  give the m the photo fi lm canister. At the Los Ange les headquarter s of the  CIA, Jo nathan spots Sa sha who looks  like she w as work ing there. Jo nathan even tually m eets up with Sasha.  Sasha adm its that she is Cheryl  Brewster,  a CIA agent,  original ly from Pi ttsburgh. Out of now here, Vlad a nd his gang beg in to c hase Jonathan a nd Cheryl on  the UCLA ca mpus. J onathan  eliminates all the S oviets with a tranquili zer gun which  he gets fr om the campus veterinary s ciences bu ilding. The Soviet s are ar rested,  the CIA ag ents thank  Jonathan  for his (i ndirect) h elp in obtai ning the f ilm, and Sa sha tells  him she wa nts to contin ue their relat ionship . After the y part,  Jonath an talks to a pretty stude nt who rebuf fs him coldl y.
